First day on the train... by Maryrose

Okay, we are on the second train, the Capitol Limited. The first train was the Silver Meteor. Our sleeper compartment was tiny.. Utterly tiny. I mean, it wasn't even a compartment.. let's just say it was smaller than a mini cooper. The beds in our car were tiny and rock hard. And then, at breakast we got there at 6:30 because that was when it started. It took 40 minutes for our food to come. And when it did come, we were almost in D.C. So that got my day off to a bad start. Also, Mom had some issues with an Amtrak employee and a cashier in D.C. In D.C, we went to the Botanic Gardens, the American Indian museum, and took a pedi-taxi to the Old Post Office tower. Then we spent some time at our cousin Chantal's house. Then we we went to lunch with my Uncle Peter and his fiance Marta. Marta's daught, Helen, also came. We then boarded this train and found our sleeping compartment is even smaller than the last one. Hopefully this trip is more enjoyable..

  3. My Dears,
Remember how small your train compartment was when you spread out in the luxurious expanse of a Skamper 21D! Knock on wood, the refrigerator keeps doing its noble work of chilling beer! Dad

  4. Maryrose - I hope it's enjoyable. You should have some pretty terrific scenery thoughout the trip assuming the weather's good. And I hope the food and the service gets better. Have you had a chance to meet any of the other people on the train? Your writing is terrific so please keep writing - the bad and the good. I must say your Dad's description of the Skamper is excellent. I'm ready to buy one and I don't even drive. I can't believe that so much space can pack up into such a tiny package - the magic of physics.

  5. Hi Maryrose, your cousin Lucy here... So glad you're going to write about your train experiences! Sounds like the sleeper cabins have gotten much smaller than they used to be, but they still are probably better than the alternative. Gigi once took a train from Chicago to California with just a seat.. and a VERY talkative seat mate. I'm enjoying reading your, and your brothers, accounts of your trip!
    xoxo, Lucy
